Standard vs. PRF vs. PDGF Microneedling: Which Do You Need?

All three trigger collagen. PRF and PDGF add growth factors to the same needling β€” that's our step-up, not radiofrequency heat.

Standard microneedling, microneedling with PRF, and microneedling with PDGF all start the same way: fine needles create controlled micro-injuries so your skin rebuilds collagen. The difference is whether we leave that repair signal to your body alone, or add growth factors β€” your own PRF, or a pharmaceutical-grade PDGF serum β€” to push remodeling further. Here's how to tell which you actually need.

The short version

  • Standard: needling alone β€” collagen from your own healing response. Best for texture, pores, and maintenance.
  • PDGF: the same needling plus a pharmaceutical-grade growth-factor serum. No blood draw. A concentrated step-up.
  • PRF: the same needling plus your own platelet-rich fibrin (a blood draw). Sustained-release growth factors β€” our strongest skin-renewal tier.
  • We don't offer RF microneedling. Our upgrade path is growth factors, not radiofrequency heat.

What standard microneedling does

Standard microneedling uses a device with fine needles to create thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin. Your body responds by producing new collagen and elastin as it repairs, which smooths texture, refines pores, and improves overall skin quality over a series of sessions. For general skin quality, mild texture, and maintenance, it's often all you need β€” effective, with modest downtime.

It works at the depth the needles reach. For a lot of men's concerns β€” rough texture, enlarged pores, dullness, early lines β€” that's plenty.

Standard needling handles most skin-quality goals. PRF or PDGF is for when you want a stronger repair signal in those same channels.

What PRF and PDGF add

Both upgrades use the micro-channels from needling to deliver growth factors while they're open. PDGF is a pharmaceutical-grade platelet-derived growth factor serum applied after needling β€” no blood draw, consistent concentration, a faster appointment. PRF uses a small blood draw, spun into platelet-rich fibrin, then applied so your own growth factors release gradually in a fibrin matrix. PRF is our premium regeneration tier; PDGF sits between standard needling and PRF.

The extra biology costs more per session than standard microneedling. You're paying for a stronger collagen signal, not for radiofrequency heat. A good provider recommends the lightest tool that achieves your goal β€” not the most expensive one by default.

If you're comparing RF microneedling

Some clinics add radiofrequency energy through the needles to heat tissue at depth. We don't offer RF microneedling. When standard needling isn't enough, we step up with PRF or PDGF growth factors instead. We'll tell you which of those β€” if either β€” your skin actually needs.

Which should you choose?

Rough guide: if your goal is overall skin quality, pores, mild texture, or ongoing maintenance, standard microneedling is usually the sensible choice. If you're dealing with more stubborn texture or acne scars, or standard needling has plateaued, PDGF or PRF is the step-up β€” PDGF when you want concentrated growth factors without a blood draw, PRF when you want the strongest, sustained-release option.

For acne scarring specifically, which tool fits depends on the scar type. Our page on microneedling for acne scars breaks down which scars respond to needling and when a growth-factor upgrade earns its place. Microneedling with PRF is our vampire facial.

What to expect either way

All three are done as a series spaced weeks apart, since collagen remodeling is gradual and cumulative. All involve numbing and short downtime β€” redness like a mild sunburn. PRF adds a few minutes for the blood draw and processing; PDGF does not. None is one-and-done, and results build over the months of the treatment series.

The honest answer is β€œit depends on your skin.” A consult tells you whether standard needling covers your goal or whether PRF or PDGF is worth the step-up β€” without pushing you to the pricier option by default.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between standard, PRF, and PDGF microneedling?
All three use fine needles to trigger collagen. Standard relies on your own healing response alone. PDGF adds a pharmaceutical-grade growth-factor serum with no blood draw. PRF adds your own platelet-rich fibrin after a blood draw, for sustained-release growth factors. We don't offer RF (radiofrequency) microneedling.
Is PRF or PDGF better than standard microneedling?
They're stronger repair signals, not universally better. Standard needling often covers texture, pores, and maintenance with less cost. PRF or PDGF is the right call for stubborn texture, scars, or when standard needling has plateaued. The lightest tool that works is the right one.
Which is better for acne scars?
Rolling and shallow scars can respond well to standard needling; more stubborn scarring often benefits from adding PRF or PDGF. Our microneedling-for-acne-scars page covers which scar types fit which approach.
Do you offer RF microneedling?
No. We don't use radiofrequency heat with needling. Our microneedling options are standard, PDGF, and PRF. If you've been comparing RF elsewhere, a consult will map that intent onto the growth-factor option that actually fits your skin.
Does PRF or PDGF microneedling cost more?
Yes β€” both are upgrades, so per-session cost is higher than standard needling. Whether that's worth it depends on whether your concern actually needs the extra growth-factor signal, which we'll assess honestly at the consult.
How many sessions do I need?
All three are done as a series spaced a few weeks apart, because collagen builds gradually. The number depends on your concern and which treatment you choose. We'll estimate a realistic treatment series at your consult.
